About the Cove

Fourteen years on the same stretch of water

Coral Cove Eats began as a 40-seat seafood room in 2012 and grew into Cairns' most complete evening out — without ever leaving Pier Point Rd.

Brand Heritage

The epochs of Pier Point

2012

The seafood room

Forty seats, one fryer, a chalkboard menu and a bet that Cairns deserved a restaurant that knew its boats.

2015

The gaming licence

The card room opens with three tables. The kitchen starts staying open late — guests don't want to choose.

2018

The terrace

The western deck is rebuilt for golden hour. Sunset sittings become the most requested tables we have.

2021

The lounge & suites

Level two opens — the whisky library, vinyl booth and three private gaming suites with their own entrance.

2026

Today

One venue, four rooms, 182,000 guests a year — and the same rule as 2012: the reef writes the menu.

Founder's Note

When I bought this address in 2011, it was a takeaway with a view it didn't deserve. The first thing I did wasn't the renovation — it was walking the marina at 6am to learn which boats actually fished. That morning set the rule this place still runs on: everything here starts with the water.

People ask why we added a casino to a seafood restaurant. The honest answer is that a great night out was never only about the plate — it's about not wanting the evening to end. The gaming floor, the lounge, the terrace: they're all the same idea. Give people a reason to stay, and make every hour of it good.

Fourteen years in, the measure I still use is the same one from that first walk: would the people who work the water choose to eat here? They do. That's the whole report card.

Five questions for the founder

Q — The beginning

Why a casino inside a restaurant?

"Because the best nights out refuse to end at dessert. I wanted one address where dinner, a proper game and a proper drink could share a roof without any of them being an afterthought." — Marcus

Q — The standard

What's the one rule you never bend?

"The boats decide the menu. The day we write a menu the ocean can't honour is the day we've stopped being this place." — Marcus

Q — The guests

Who is the Cove actually for?

"Anyone who thinks an evening deserves architecture. Locals on a Tuesday, honeymooners on a Saturday, a poker regular on a Thursday — the building serves them all." — Marcus
